The Gulag Archipelago by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn Bookcast #55
Written between 1958 and 1968, it was published in the West in 1973 and, thereafter, circulated in the underground publication "Samizdat" in the Soviet Union until its appearance in a Russian literary journal … 2017-12-11 2020-12-14 2020-01-09 Solzhenitsyn departs regularly from the prisoners' journey for substantial essays on the evolution, psychology and sociology of the Gulag country. To show that repression began with Lenin and the Bolshevik revolution, not with Stalin, he carefully traces the development of the political police, penal institutions, criminal code and political trials from 1918. Solzhenitsyn suggested that those who were able to survive and not break down mentally in the gulags were very often those who had adopted a Stoic approach to life. This approach Solzhenitsyn strove to adhere to, and is reflected in the following insight which also serves as a stark reminder that one’s state of mind ultimately has the power to overcome even the harshest of external conditions. The contrast between Solzhenitsyn’s The Gulag Archipelago and Varlam Shalamov’s Kolyma Tales, with its dark and unmitigated view of human nature, could not be more striking.

Peterson gets what happened to Solzhenitsyn – “In Solzhenitsyn’s case, the moral vision grows organically from a religious commitment. The Gulag was one of the most powerful and important organizations in the Soviet Union, ruling a vast empire of real estate, slave labor, and industrial projects. But the messed up truth of the Soviet Gulag—its brutal inefficiency, the origins of its most horrific policies—is still not widely known. To describe the Soviet penal system, Alexander Solzhenitsyn, who survived eight years of Gulag incarceration, wrote a massive book titled ‘Archipelago Gulag’ after collecting hundreds of Solzhenitsyn and the Gulag - Daniel J. Solzhenitsyn is one of my favorite writers. I must have read The Gulag Archipelago at least five times over the years, along with most of his other works. One book by Solzhenitsyn that I have yet to read (or even see a copy of) is his "Two Hundred Years Together" …
